Castlewood Canyon

A friend of mine visited Castlewood Canyon yesterday. I checked out the provided link and thought that this would be a nice hike for today with all the great colors of fall on the trees!

Chris agreed and so we took the kids and Popcorn this morning and went down to Franktown where the canyon starts.

After paying our admission to this canyon we parked the car and walked on paved concrete ways through a beautiful scenery. Reminded me a lot of northern Germany (Heidelandschaft) with it's bushes and pine trees.

At the first 'point of interest' we finally caught a glimpse of the canyon itself. It is for sure not the Grand Canyon but still pretty breathtaking! There is a little creek running down the canyon and we wondered if we ever will make it to the water. Can you believe that Chris, who grew up just a few miles northwest of it, has never been to this canyon? And today was the perfect day to explore it!

On the way down the canyon where we finally just had a path to walk on!

Inside the canyon

A huge rock in the middle of the path

At the creek

...and before you get up on the other side again, you need to walk further down once more

On the other side of the canyon, just a beautiful scenery!

This canyon used to have a dam and hold water but this dam broke in 1933 after heavy rain and all the water got until Downtown Denver what is actually quite a distance away (like 30 miles or so). I think i read that only one person got killed in the flood. There should be ruins of the old dam but somehow I missed seeing it in all these rocks. I only can guess where the dam was...

..and a short video of our trip!
